Application Tips – Liquid Gaskets

Anaerobic Liquid Gaskets for Machined Surfaces

What is the recommended surface finish and flatness for optimum performance of an anaerobic gasket?

Surface flatness of 0.1mm over a length of 400mm is recommended. Surface finish between 1.6Ra to 3.2Ra must be maintained for maximum strength. Due to these factors Loxeal anaerobic liquid gasket is recommended to be used on rigid and machines metal to metal joints.

What surface preparation precautions one must take while using Anaerobic liquid gasket?

Loxeal anaerobic FIP gaskets seal by adhesion and not compression, hence surface preparation is very important for their successful performance. Ensure surface is dry, clean and free from any foreign particles by cleaning with a solvent based cleaner.

Is it necessary to apply liquid gasket on bolt holes?

It is a good practice to apply a continuous bead of anaerobic liquid gasket inside or around bolt holes to eliminate any secondary leak paths.

How much time can be allowed before flange assembly takes place after application of Anaerobic liquid Gasket

Since anaerobic liquid gaskets do not cure in presence of moisture, it is recommended to do the flange assembly in about <1Hourto avoid contamination during this time. Contamination on surface can lead to poor surface adhesion and improper curing.

After assembly of flange joint, how much time can be allowed before torqueing of flange bolts

After applying the material to parts, fasteners must be torqued immediately, typically in <3mins

How much should be the bolt spacing?

Less than 10times nominal diameter of bolt.

How to ensure even spreading

Proper surface wetting/spreading of anaerobic liquid gasket is recommended for optimum sealing performance. For this purposeroller spreading or screen printing are good methods to use.

How to disassemble the flanges for servicing?

Generally anaerobic flange sealants are low to medium in strength and are easy to dismantle even after years. It is still a good idea to provide a wedge slot between two flanges to allow easy disassembly process.

RTV Sealants for Sheetmetals

What is the recommended surface finish and flatness?

Since Silicone RTV gaskets can fill large gaps up to 6mm, surface flatness and finish are not very critical in most engineering applications.

What kind of surface preparation is required for successful application of RTC Gaskets

RTV Siliconegaskets seal by adhesion and not compression, hence surface preparation isvery important for their successful performance. Ensure surface is dry, clean and free fromany foreign particles by cleaning with a solvent based cleaner prior to application.

What is the recommended thickness of RTV Silicone gasket for best performance

Approximately 1.25 to 2mm thick film should provide optimum performance. One can use standoffs of 0.5 to 1.25mm height or can prepare retention grooves of 1.5mm depth and 3mm widthfor cast aluminium flange and 3 to6mm width in case of stamped steel flange.

Do I need to apply RTV Silicone gasket on bolt holes

Yes.It is a good practice to apply a continuous bead of silicone inside or around bolt holes to eliminate any secondaryleak paths.

How much time can be allowed before flange assembly takes place after application of RTV Silicone Gasket

Since RTV Silicone gasket immediately starts curing after its application, it is important to assemble flange joint very quickly, typically<3min

After assembly of flange joint, how much time can be allowed before torqueing of flange bolts

After applying the RTV Silicone gasket to parts, fasteners must be torqued immediately, typically <5mins

How much should be the bolt spacing?

Less than 10times nominal dia of flange bolt

How much flange width is required for optimum sealing performance

15mm

Gasket Dressing Compounds

What is the best way to use Gasket dressing compound

Gasket dressing compounds are generally recommended as an additional sealing mechanism to be used with pre-formed gaskets.Micro gaps betweenpre-formed gasket and flange are perfectly filled by gasket dressing compounds to provide perfect sealing under compression load.

Can Loxeal 08-07 be used alone on a flange joint

GenerallyLoxeal 08-07 is recommended to be used along with a pre-formed gaseket however on low pressure systems if surface gap is less than 0.1mmit can provide good long term sealing and can be used standalone.

Surface preparation

Gasketing dressing compounds provide sealing due to their highly thixotropic nature under compression.Hence, it is advisable to have the surface cleanedwith a solvent based cleaner to elimimate any contamination or introduce any slip.

Chemical resistance

Gasket dressing compounds are formulated to provide  a sealing film that is highly resistant to a variety of industrial fluids such as gasoline, fuels, oils, waterand many more.

Do they dry/cure after application

Loxeal 08-07 is a non-curing liquid gasketing compound that provides long term sealing while remaining pasty.Hence they are easy to apply and even easier to clean/remove/service.

Can gasket dressing compounds be used on threaded joints

Yes.They can be used on both threaded and non-threaed joints.
